Located in the state Capital of Jackson, the Mississippi Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the state and has been a community-supported institution for more than 100 years. The Museum boasts an impressive permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art, in addition to hosting world-class traveling exhibitions. The Mississippi Story, a free ongoing exhibition comprised of more than 200 objects from the Museum’s permanent collection, offers Mississippians and visitors alike the opportunity to explore the remarkable history of visual arts in the Magnolia State. In addition to fulfilling its mission of “engaging Mississippians in the visual arts,” the Museum also offers unique dining and shopping experiences at The Palette Café by Viking and in The Museum Store.

The Art Garden at the Mississippi Museum of Art, a 1.2 acre public green space, breaks down barriers between the neighboring arts organizations and serves as the nexus of a cultural district that empowers creativity, expression, and synergy in the arts community. The Art Garden features a welcoming lawn, seasonal foliage, native garden beds, permanent art installations, soothing fountains, and outdoor terrace dining. This versatile, open, outdoor space is open to the public from 10AM – 5PM daily. In 2010, the Museum received the National Medal for Museum Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency.

The Palette Café by Viking is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Lunch served 11 am - 2 pm.

Closed Sunday, and Monday.

Café phone number: 601-965-9900

  • First-class museum in the heart of Jackson. Great exhibits, all displayed very well. I loved this museum and would go again in a heartbeat.

  • So much fun. We were able to take our time and the back story on all the art was worth it. The free portion is nice, but dont be afraid to splurge on the featured art.

  • I visited this museum while on a road trip across Mississippi, and I was blown away! They have a fantastic permanent collection of beautiful pieces that are free to the public, as well as a $40 invitational exhibit that is well worth it! I am always delighted to donate to parks and museums! The personnel is also quite polite, and the museum is rather lovely. Outside the museum, there is a lovely Art Garden where you may sit and see the wonderful flowers, trees, and sculptures.
  • Very eclectic array of art for viewing, surrounded by the most peaceful and eye pleasing art garden. The events held here, despite a large crowd, remain comfortable and inviting due to the architecturally designed “open-flow” that eases groups & individuals alike from room to room without hindrance. Definitely recommend to locals as a common visiting spot and to the out of state visitors..I say a you should! Well lit. Safe area. Street parking.Metered. However parking is Free on weekends and after 5 pm every day.
