  • If you are looking for a beautiful mountain trail with great views, but is short & easy, this is it. Drive to the top parking lot which is the top of Mt.Jefferson, and there is a gravel hill, past the picnic shelter, leading to the top of the mountain. This is the most strenuous part of the hike. (But not too strenuous! Our four year old does it easily.)Once at the top, there is a 1.1 mile loop that is relatively flat & easy with amazing views. The view from Luther Rock is beautiful, but hold on to your little ones. This is a dangerous area. There are rocks on the trail so not good for strollers. The loop back goes through the woods, downhill at first then uphill toward the end. You come out on the gravel road you started on but closer to the picnic area. There are restrooms here but they close in winter. We were there April 2 and restrooms were still closed.
  • Awesome place for short hikes with amazing views of West Jefferson and Ashe County. You literally make a short drive to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy a convenient, well maintained picnic area which was accessible for my 82 year old mother in law. On a clear day you can see distant peaks in VA and TN. Very near interesting shops and places to eat.
