The 8 hectare (20 acre) Jekyll Island Historic District plays host to a variety of buildings from the famous Jekyll Island Club era. The Jekyll Island Club was an exclusive recreational association on the island, where some America's wealthiest families, such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Morgans, would come to relax. Though it thrived in the early 20th century, the club was forced to disband in 1947. Today, you can stroll around what was once a millionaire's playground and admire the luxurious vacation properties. The Jekyll Island Club Hotel serves as the centerpiece, and more than 30 historical buildings surround it. Take a narrated tram tour to learn more about this era, and pop into some of the museums, galleries, and stores that now exist in the cottages.
