Tweetsie Trail, Johnson City

#1 of 25 in Things to do in Johnson City
Hiking Trail · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
In 2013 the City of Johnson City completed its acquisition of a 10-mile stretch of the former ET&WNC Railroad from Johnson City through Elizabethton. The first 7-mile segment celebrated its grand opening Labor Day weekend 2014. The final 3 miles have been completed and celebrating with a grand opening Labor Day weekend 2015.

The recreational trail along the former railroad corridor provides an opportunity for walking, hiking, running, biking, etc. on a relatively flat grade in a natural setting. The trail connects Johnson City and Elizabethton communities. The trail takes its name from the locomotives of our railroading past whose high-pitched whistles led local residents to nickname them "Tweetsie."

To schedule an event on the Tweetsie Trail, please contact Johnson City Parks & Recreation by email or by phone 423-283-5815.

  • We rode the Tweetsie Trail from Elizabethton to Johnson City (and back again.). There were few scenic areas along the trail, with more of it along the commercial road.  more »
