Alamo Drafthouse was founded in Austin, TX by Tim and Karrie League, who were driven by a simple love for great film, food, and beer. Their first theater at 409 Colorado Street was a fairly simple one screen operation, built by hand, that initially featured second run titles at discount rates. The Leagues' passion for programming quickly soared past the standard repertory theater midnight fare.To visit Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and other attractions in Kansas City, use our Kansas City trip planner .
Soon, what was once a non-descript parking garage became the hub for every true cinephile in central Texas. Within its first year the venue was playing host to film premieres, visiting filmmakers, and even caught the eye of Quentin Tarantino, who began hosting legendary five-day marathon screenings of classic exploitation titles from his personal collection.
Over the years, the original Colorado Street location became a laboratory for more innovative programming and events, and the Leagues began opening more and larger theaters that offered a fresh mix of Hollywood product and indie fare.
Today, Alamo Drafthouse has dozens of locations across the United States, with many more to come. Each location is managed with the same dedication and careful regard to each detail of the experience, and all locations share in nationally produced signature programming and special events that have been inspired by those first experiments with alternative content that the Leagues developed in their original theater on Colorado Street.

My first visit. I will definitely go back. It’s nice to know they don’t mess around with talkers and texters. The popcorn came in a big bowl, placed on our table that my husband and I could easily sha... more »
This place almost has a geeky appreciation for movies. For example, they're doing a Shaun of the Dead movie night soon. Last night we went to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Our theater was very ro... more »
Vintage theater with a modern twist! You go to the movie for an experience and that’s what you will get at Alamo Drafthouse. The food and bar are great and just add to the whole experience. Even if you are not in the mood for a movie it is worth stopping by to have a drink or get a quick bite to eat. You may also stumble upon some other activities taking place in the bar area like dance lessons or live music. Bottom line if you are looking for a good time then this is a place to check out.
Good tasting food and decent cocktail offerings but theaters getting a bit run down. Floors are stained and sticky, seats could be more comfortable and some tables need replaced at seats. Also, it took about 40 min. to get the burger and salad we ordered. Server was prompt but kitchen was very slow.
