Tom’s Town Distilling Co. draws its name and inspiration from the country’s most polarizing and corrupt political boss, Tom Pendergast. Pendergast had roots in the liquor business as a saloon keeper and as the founder of a wholesale liquor company.

Under Pendergast’s influence, Kansas City flouted Prohibition. Tom’s irreverence for federal statutes in favor of bare-knuckled local business dealings allowed his town to emerge as the “Paris of the Plains.” Money, jazz, and spirits flowed like water, right out in the open. When a newspaperman asked Pendergast how he justified ignoring Prohibition, he shrugged and said, “The people are thirsty.”

Today the people are still thirsty in Kansas City and across the U.S. We aim to satisfy that thirst by distilling spirits in the time-honored ways that produce superior products. You can taste our high standards and attention to detail in every sip of the gin, vodka, and bourbon we make on Main Street in downtown Kansas City. The deco optimism and glamorous magnetism of the roaring 1920s comes alive through Tom’s Town.

  • We took the tour and Ben was great. He was direct and to the point in order to fit as much information into our time. Great history and vibe. We had cocktails and bar bites. The royal gold bourbon...

  • Came just for dinner and drinks, not the tour. The cocktails were fantastic and the atmosphere was great. Don't expect full entrees or anything, more of a family style almost tapas likes situation...

  • I come here every week. Carly is usually there and knows everything about Toms Towns rich history starting from the prohibition period in Kansas City. The staff here are very friendly. If you like old fashions make sure to order one here. I always order it from every bar and the one they make is by far the best I have ever had.
  • A friend and I were visiting KC for the weekend and decided to go on a distillery tour. We purchased our tickets online the same day. There happened to be a wedding taking place that night, but that didn't interfere with the tour at all. The atmosphere was pleasant and neat. The tour itself was VERY enjoyable! Ben was a great guide. He broke down the tour into three parts, used humor, and was very knowledgeable. I hadn't ever done a tasting before and wasn't sure I would enjoy it, but I loved it. Their bourbon and vodka were absolutely delicious. I don't like gin at all but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever had. Some of the other tour guests that preferred gin to vodka and bourbon absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, my friend and I had reservations right after the tour so we weren't able to stay any longer. But I'd 100% recommend this distillery and tour to friends.
