Steelgrass Farm is a Kauai family farm dedicated to sustainable diversified agriculture. We grow chocolate, vanilla, award winning honey, timber bamboo, tropical fruits and flowers, lettuces and market vegetables, ginger and turmeric on forty-six acres near Kapaa on Kauai's east side.

Hi, I'm Will Lydgate, co-owner of the farm with my sister Emily. We're the fifth generation of the Lydgate family on Kauai, and we're dedicated to sharing our knowledge, so ten years ago we started the Steelgrass Chocolate Farm Tour, the only chocolate tour and tasting on a genuine family farm on Kauai.

We're also growing our farm, expanding from our current thousand chocolate trees toward our goal of four thousand. We are already Kauai's largest chocolate grower, and reaching that goal will make our orchard one of the largest in the state -- which also means in the country, since Hawaii is the only state where chocolate trees will grow.

  • Lydgate Farms was a deliciously, chocolate-loaded educational experience. The tour was fabulous. It was jam (cacao-jam) packed with information on not only how chocolate is grown, harvested and produced, but also on other fruits and vegetable native and non-native to the island. Did you know vanilla beans were an orchid? Or that cacao can only grow within 22° of the equator? Learn about these things and so much more on your group tour. Great for families with inquisitive kids or just as an individual wanting to learn more about sustainability, conservation and safe trade practices. And I almost forgot the best part, CHOCOLATE!!! You get to try loads of chocolate…I definitely felt that chocolate high! My recommendation…the Kauai chocolate-covered coffee beans and the honey…but only if your lucky enough to catch it in stock…it goes quickly so get some if you can. Don’t miss this gem on your tour of the island. P.S. - try to do it early on in your adventure. You will look at all the plants/fruits the island has to offer in a different light after…promise!
  • Amazing tour. If you love wine tasting, chocolate and fruit you'll love this experience. We walked through the farm, they do have rides if walking is rough for you. As we walked the guide identified different plants, matching any tour of a botanical garden. We then sampled local fruit and chocolates from around the world. They explained the chocolate making process and differences between chocolates. Definitely one of my favorite experiences on the island.
