Even the most adventurous hikers find the 18 km (11 mi) Kalalau Trail to be a challenge, a tremendously rewarding one. It has been noted as one of the most dangerous hikes in the United States--be sure to bring hiking poles with you. Average hikers need about two days to complete the trail. Expect steep drop-offs and a path as narrow as one foot. Don't cross streams if the water level is too high, and know that mudslides can be deadly. Plan to bring survival gear; water from the sources along the way must be purified to drink. You'll need to obtain a permit in order to camp at one of two designated sites. Don't let this place's beauty distract you from your own safety. To visit Kalalau Trail and other attractions in Haena, use our Haena online trip itinerary planner.

Amazing but the trail makes you pay almost every step, be it ups and downs, the rain or the wind. There are also two points where it can be be easy to get off trail. Two days of rain, wet feet...

Awesome trail! If anyone is coming by and finds a gold dolphin charm (about 1/1.5 inches long) anywhere near the beach about 2 miles in, please contact me! Where proper shoes and be ready to get them.... more

Great hike and doable for most people. The view is unbelievable and breathtaking. After you walk 2 miles and cross a stream, you will be generously rewarded by a gorgeous and quiet beach. Because of its extreme popularity and the crowd control by limiting visitors allowed on the trail, you need to secure your passes for your party ahead of time online.

Awesome views! This trail is extreme. Continous uphill hike with mostly stepping stone rocks. Do not hike this trail if you have medical conditions as it is exhausting! The heat and humidity will try your soul. Bring water! You will sweat to the extreme. The trail is 11 miles long and only recommended for experienced hikers. We only went to the 0.9 mile mark to get pics of the sea cliffs. There is no cell service whatsoever and the only way to get help if needed is to alert a hiker going back to the park. Rescue will take hours so pace yourself and take it slow! Fellow hikers we're awesome and incredibly supportive. Worth it for the amazing once in a lifetime views!
