The Wild Animal Sanctuary, Keenesburg

#4 of 7 in Zoos & Aquariums in Colorado
Must see · Zoo · Zoo / Aquarium
Specializing in the rescue and care of large predators that have been mistreated, The Wild Animal Sanctuary provides a safe place for these majestic creatures, as well as a spot where people can visit them. The impressive center boats 290 hectares (720 acres) of lush grassland, providing ample room for its hundreds of resident animals to roam. View lions, bears, tigers, wolves, and more from the sanctuary's "Mile into the Wild" observation walkway, which stretches above their habitats to cause minimum disruption and discomfort to these territorial animals. As the walkway is elevated, you may want to bring a jacket for protection from the wind. Open 7 days a week at 9:00 a.m. Closing at sunset. Please check website for more information. • Freaking amazing place! Plan to come back. You likely won’t see enough on just one day. Our kids got tired after 3-4 hours. So we came back the next day for a few hours. Foxes, coyotes, bobcats, lions, tigers, bears, etc, all treated well, cared for, well fed. Great to see them have space to roam and live closer to normal lives (these once caged animals can never be truly wild). Wonderful volunteers. The cafe is worth a visit.
  • This is a very large place to visit. Plan on all day, to visit. You will learn a lot about, wild animals. We saw, red foxes, lions, bears, wolves, and more. You will walk on steel grates walk-ways, up high over the grounds above the animals.
