Where Mountains, Ice, and Ocean Meet
Mountains, ice, and sea all converge in dramatic fashion at Kenai Fjords National Park. The Harding Icefield, which serves as the centerpiece of the park, covers 777 sq km (300 sq mi), and another 40 glaciers run off of it. The icy environs might sound inhospitable to wildlife, but the opposite is true. Black bears, moose, and mountain goats make up just a few of the inland residents while sea otters, seals, porpoises, whales, and dolphins inhabit the frigid waters. The varied landscape also makes the park an ideal playground for hikers, kayakers, anglers, mountaineers, skiers, snowshoers, and boaters. With the popular cruise-ship port of Seward nearby, Kenai Fjords is relatively accessible for remote Alaska.
