#1 of 12 in Things to do in Kennesaw
The historical location of a major Civil War event, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park preserves the site of a battle fought between the Union and Confederate armies on June 18, 1864. Over 5,300 soldiers died during this battle, won against all odds by the vastly outnumbered Confederate forces. Designated as one of the country's historical districts in 1966, the park contains three major battlefield areas and a visitor center, where you’ll find a museum, theater, and information desk. Stop by the theater to watch short films about the battle, or walk some of the 27 km (17 mi) of interpretative hiking trails, which are lined with earthworks, cannon emplacements, and monuments dedicated to the soldiers who fought here. • This is a great place to visit. The battlefield is very much intact and a must see Civil War site in Atlanta. The visitor center is pretty well maintained as well. The museum inside the visitor center has a lot of great artifacts; however, it is definitely in need of some upgrades. I really think that you can drive to the top of the mountain if you choose not to hike it. This park on a clear weather day is always crowded though with people from the community. Many people choose to hike the road instead of the trail, so be careful if you choose to drive to the top. This is a great park that I will definitely visit again.
  • Well maintained and one of the few battlefields you can tour in Georgia. Bring your hiking shoes and a lot of water and enjoy the hike to the top of the mountain. I'd call it intermediate. A lot of dogs, everyone cleaned up after them. Trails are well maintained by volunteers...thank you! Well shaded. Come early, have lunch in Marietta, and come back for some of the shorter trails. Oh, and it's free! Hello!
  • Nice place for a hike with the added benefit of interesting displays in the visitor center. The info regarding the battle is well presented. If possible go on a weekday because you can drive up to the mountain top and explore from there. On weekends they usually close the road to the top but do have a bus. In addition, weekend parking by the visitor center can be crowded (just means you'll need to park in one of the farther out lots).
  • This is one of my favorite parks. I have explored all of the trails here (that I know of) and there are probably around 20 miles of trails here. Some of the trails are super hilly and some are kinda flattish for Georgia. There are trails through the woods, rocky trails up the mountain, and trails through fields. I almost always will see deer and other wildlife here. The visitor center is pretty cool too.
  • Fun place to walk for adults, difficult for little ones. Parents with small children need to be patient and helpful. Bring enough water for everyone in your group. And lastly, head back down before the meltdown. This is a wonderful place for families! Take the time, encourage the love of nature! KOMO is a gem!
