Encompassing the most isolated and far-flung islands of the Florida Keys, Dry Tortugas National Park showcases vibrant coral reefs, tropical landscapes, and an island fortress. Set in the Gulf of Mexico nearly 109 km (68 mi) away from Key West, the park can be accessed only by sea. You climb aboard the official ferry service licensed by park authorities to reach the seven islands. Stop by the visitor center located inside Fort Jefferson, a 19th-century brick castle occupying the second-largest islet, for information on the park's history, oceanic ecology, and archaeology. Watch carefully for some of the park's nearly 300 species of birds, including nesting pelicans, terns, and frigatebirds. PutDry Tortugas National Park into our Key West trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

We took a half day trip by seaplane and loved it. We toured the fort and then went snorkeling along the wall. We saw some colorful fish and really enjoyed our time there. The time went by almost too..... more

We had a great time at the Dry Tortugas. Seas were a little rough so take precautions if you get motion sickness. Snorkeling was great, nice beach and cool history.

So amazing! I cannot recommend camping here enough! I’m not usually the tent camping type, but I would totally do this again! We stayed 2 nights-wish we had stayed for 3. You basically have the island to yourself after the ferry leaves at 2:30. Sunsets and the stars at night - hard to beat. Don’t let the primitive setting scare you off! The rangers and island personnel were helpful, friendly, and professional. The public areas around the island were clean and safe. The only creatures we encountered on the island itself were hermit crabs and they kept to themselves. Again, I would do this again…for all three nights.
This National Park is an adventure from start to finish! Remote and magical, to get here use the Yankee Freedom ferry, and when you arrive, take the quick tour. Explore the pristine beaches, the clear water, the sea life, snorkel, and the fort itself and step back into time.
