Dry Tortugas National Park, Key West

4.8
#1 of 287 in Nature in Florida
Encompassing the most isolated and far-flung islands of the Florida Keys, Dry Tortugas National Park showcases vibrant coral reefs, tropical landscapes, and an island fortress. Set in the Gulf of Mexico nearly 109 km (68 mi) away from Key West, the park can be accessed only by sea. You climb aboard the official ferry service licensed by park authorities to reach the seven islands. Stop by the visitor center located inside Fort Jefferson, a 19th-century brick castle occupying the second-largest islet, for information on the park's history, oceanic ecology, and archaeology. Watch carefully for some of the park's nearly 300 species of birds, including nesting pelicans, terns, and frigatebirds. Put Dry Tortugas National Park into our Key West trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Amazing trip back in history. Yankee Freedom takes care of you on the boat ride. Fort Jefferson has a Junior Ranger program that is a great activity for all ages to tour the site. Swimming and snorkeling was fun and lots of fish to see.
  • Everyone should see this place at least once. Walk the grounds and snorkel around the Fort. Lots of fish and coral. The bluest water you'll ever see. Worth the trip. You'll want to stay! Awe inspiring!
  • Fantastic and interesting National Park. My family and I really enjoyed this piece of Florida history. The islands of the Dry Tortugas, at the westernmost end of the Florida Keys, are the site of Fort Jefferson, a Civil War-era fort that is the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere. The park is home to undisturbed coral reefs and shipwrecks, and is only accessible by plane or boat.
  • Holy cow! This place is a must on your bucket list. One of the coolest most unique places in the world. So beautiful! Look into camping for the night, well worth it.
  • must see, this is such a neat place. you can tour the fort, which is fascinating. Then enjoy the beautiful waters by snorkeling swimming on the beach. The water is almost see through. I recommend taking a seaplane from Key West instead of the boat, much faster.
