Sink your teeth into local history at Fort East Martello Museum, an outstanding example of Martello style military architecture. Construction on the fort began in 1862 by the U.S Army, intended to protect Key West against a Confederate sea assault. Remarkably, the Union-controlled island saw no battle during the Civil War and the fort was abandoned unfinished as the war drew to a close. In 1950 the fort opened as a museum, preserving a collection of relics from the Civil War. The museum also features exhibits about local cigar-manufacturing industries, folk art, and the infamous Robert the Doll, a haunted doll from the collection of artist Robert Eugene Otto. Fort East Martello Museum Reviews
This location is the perfect mix of history and art. Such a neat place. Something for everyone. Make sure you ask Robert if you can take his picture. more »
It was a great way to get out of the house during the hellish June weather. Very historic place with a lot of shade. Solid 9.5/10 for us. more »
It was a great experience I waited eight years to check off my bucket list. The man in the gift shop was very friendly and informative, the exhibits were well maintained and set up well. I finally got to meet Robert the Doll and am very pleased to say I had his permission to take a photo! I cannot stress this enough: Just be polite and courteous and ASK PERMISSION BEFORE taking his photo. There were a couple other guests who were rude to him, I think he will be expecting their letters of apology soon.
Atmosphere is eerie and interesting, really enjoyed the self tour option and exploring the forts hidden wonders. The museum allow you to travel back in time to a period where of discovery and imagination. Recommend you to visit if your in Key West.
