Grab your pick and a pan and head to Big Thunder Gold Mine for some old-fashioned fun underground. Take a tour of the gold mine, which operated from 1882 to 1914, and learn about the history of the mine from informed guides. Discover from guides how the miners extracted gold from the mined ore, and, as you walk through dark and narrow shafts, learn how the miners created the shafts with only candlelight to guide them. At the museum you'll discover a large collection of mining equipment, including a stamp mill and blacksmithing equipment. Finally, take a turn at panning for gold or gems in the stream on the property. All areas of the tour and site are wheelchair accessible. The neat thing about this is they turn it into a haunted gold mine in October on the weekends. The school is also turned into a haunted school, and they have a haunted forest. Fun!

the mine went further back than we thought. fun experience the kids enjoyed it. they have an old mining cart that you can sit in for photos inside the mine. tour guide gave great facts about the mine the entire tour. if someone needs to have a wheelchair it's easy to push through the mine as well.

Amazing experience…. We got the half day claim package on Groupon. The lady behind the counter who runs it was happy to walk me around the shop and show me local stones I can find around the area. Trent the tour guide is amazing amazing! Very passionate, very knowledgeable. Could probably be a geologist anywhere, and does an amazing job teaching and making it fun!!
