  • My extended family had the pleasure and enjoyable experience of visiting Garden Island Chocolates for a Tour and Chocolate Tasting last week during our trip to Kauai. It was a twist of scheduling mishaps and fate that we ended up on this tour and we are so glad that we did. My husband, who isn’t even a particular fan of chocolates, noted that this is the “best tour he’s ever been on,” and I agreed. It was notable that both my 9-year-old daughter AND her generations older grandparents were enthused and riveted by the tour and presentation. The tour starts off with a brief walking experience along Garden Island’s grove of fruit and spice trees to learn about the variety of plants grown on the island and on their farm. We continued on a bit further into their cacao groves in this little shaded area that is just calm and beautiful and amazing. All tour participants were given the opportunity to see what a cacao pod looks like, see one broken open, sample seeds, and hear about the history and current process that makes the chocolate we consume. After the walking tour, there is a seated presentation and tasting under a canopy of MANY different chocolate combined with different flavors as well as chocolate derived from different places, highlighting the flavor differences based on differences in soil and climate. We also had a chocolate drink prepared for us, which was delicious! In addition, all of the health benefits of the different chocolates and combined substances were clearly and effectively presented, really causing my family to consider changes in our approach to health. This tour was one of the highlights of our Hawaiian vacation. The highlight of the tour and presentation was the presenter, Maddie. She was knowledgeable and engaging and had such a clear passion for both chocolate AND health and especially for the combination of the two. It was noted that Garden Island Chocolates is working on a larger facility with visitors able to see more parts of the chocolate process in depth, which will only add to the experience. We would definitely recommend this tour to any visitors to Kauai.
  • Amazing experience! Wife and I went and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Owner was fantastic. He was knowledgeable, kind, entertaining, and gracious throughout the tour. I read through some of the negative reviews and I couldn’t understand why people would say some of the things that they did. Don’t expect anything fancy…you’re on a FARM. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. My only feedback would be to have some napkins/paper towels/wet-nap in order to clean your hands after chocolate tasting, as chocolate gets on your hands easily. Even with somewhat sticky hands, we had a great time!! Chocolate was GREAT.
