    Visited the American Merchant Marine Museum for the first time. I really enjoyed the museum and all of the ship models. Information relating to the maritime was very interesting. Including the sword.....  more »

    Just wow! The museum is located on the grounds of the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. The building is a beautiful converted older home. It isn’t the Smithsonian, for sure, but it probably doesn’t enjoy that kind of funding either. We enjoyed seeing the ship models and learning more about how important the Merchant Marine is in both peacetime and war. I really had no idea before visiting the museum how weapons, tanks, and such are transported overseas. I also learned about the midshipmen (students) from the Academy who lost their lives during WW II, and that they were the only students from any federal service academy to serve during that war. Highly recommend.
