Latigo Ranch, Kremmling

#6 of 10 in Things to do in Kremmling
Latigo Ranch was originally homesteaded by a man named F. J. Kasdorf. He moved to Kremmling by covered wagon in 1923 with his wife, Eva and infant daughter after refusing the commission as a lieutenant at the end of WWI. From there, he built up and ran the Snowshoe Dude Ranch for nearly 20 years. He built the main lodge single-handedly, save a bit of help in hauling lumber. Reportedly, Kasdorf was a bit of a recluse who, among other things, caught live wild mountain sheep for the Denver Zoo. He expanded his original land purchase into a cattle ranch.

By 1955, the Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association had listed the Snowshoe Ranch as being able to accommodate 25 guests. Kasdorf boasted he had a modern log ranch house and lodge with a beautiful, two-hundred-mile view, at the rate of $75 per week.

The Grand County Historical Society speculated that Zane Grey stayed at the Snowshoe Ranch, or at least camped nearby, while he wrote Mysterious Rider. The Kasdorfs said in their advertisements that, “Guests could ride forest-Indian trails that Theodore Roosevelt and Zane Grey knew!”

After the Kasdorfs sold Snowshoe Ranch in 1960, the ranch ownership passed through the hands of several different owners. The Christiansons bought 53 acres and added a few cabins while they continued ranching operations. The Lyons bought Snowshoe in 1973, the Krewsons in 1977, and David Wasserstrom in 1982. David Wasserstrom was an attorney from Philadelphia who made many improvements to the ranch, beginning with changing the name to “Latigo” - a Spanish word referring to a strap of leather which holds the cinch to a saddle. He built three duplex cabins, a large social club, barn, and bunkhouse, and added the pond. He also made the final connection to Red Dirt Road, eliminating the need for County Road 17. It was a much-needed improvement, as the latter required opening several gates and was poorly maintained.

Randy and Lisa George with Jim and Kathie Yost bought Latigo in 1987 and ran it together for 29 years before Jim and Kathie chose to retire. The Georges bought them out at the end of 2016, and their growing family intends to continue running the ranch for many years to come.

The Georges live on the ranch year-round, operating Latigo as a western dude ranch during the summer and a Nordic ski center in the winter.

  • My family and I can't praise Latigo Ranch enough! This family-run ranch simply can't do enough for its guests - I've never encountered a holiday where the hosts were so flexible and attuned to guest needs. Bear in mind if you are price-comparing with other ranches that this ranch quotes all-inclusive prices, including taxes and gratuities - you will not be asked to pay a cent more (except if you wish to buy alcohol and there is a great wine selection!). The welfare and condition of the horses is excellent, and there are plenty of horses available for different ability and confidence levels. Wonderful trails all through the picturesque Rockies - in a full week of riding, we didn't get near to exploring all of the trails. There are plenty of fast trails for riders wanting to lope/canter. All of the staff (wranglers, maintenance, housekeeping, kitchen) are excellent - well-trained and a happy, cohesive team - and they are clearly cherished by the family because they come back as often as they can! The food is incredible, with lots of options for even the pickiest of kids. There are many optional activities for riders and non-riders, from rafting, shooting, swimming, hiking, yoga, etc. The week's activities are so well conceived that you never feel rushed, but there is always something to do, with plenty of variety so it's impossible to get bored. Time can be spent with the family as well as getting down time for parents. Simply a perfect destination! We are a family that loves to explore new places but we make an exception for Latigo - we can't wait to go back.
  • We just returned from our stay at Latigo and we have had 2 crying children over how much they loved their horses and didn't want to leave them. The atmosphere is so peaceful and serene, a perfect place to unplug and connect with the beauty around you. The scenery is incredible, the wildflowers are stunning and the people are some of the sweetest we have ever met. The George's hire wonderful staff that take care of all of their guests from babysitting to taking them on trail rides at the last minute. Everyone was so accommodating and flexible. We were very thankful for that. All of that was amazing but I have to tell you that the thing I was most excited about every day was the food! Spencer George is an amazing chef and prepared creative and delicious food! This experience is well worth drive and money. Don't miss this amazing vacation!
