North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher
At North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher you'll discover the marine life of the Cape Fear region. Touch sharks and sea urchins and meet a loggerhead sea turtle. In the freshwater life gallery that showcases streams, ponds, swamps, and trees, explore the world of freshwater fish, reptiles, and mammals. See box turtles, catfish, snakes, and even albino alligators. In the coastal waters gallery, you'll learn about the animals that live in the surf zone; then move through to the open oceans gallery for an education about animals that live farther off-shore such as octopus and jellyfish. Talk to the scuba divers as they swim with rays and observe the feeding of sturgeon, turtles, stingrays, and sharks. We have young children who are very interested in wildlife. This aquarium is very engaging for children. It not only has a wealth of sea creatures to observe, but also provides many opportunities for children to interact with aquarium wildlife. There are even touch tanks with dedicated staff ready to guide experiences for little ones. The very helpful and knowledgeable staff readily provide all sorts of information in ways that engage both youngsters and adults. There are exhibits indoors and in outdoor habitats. Also an outdoor play space with lots of safe movement activities (including slides for preschool ages and some safe climbing options). And an outdoor walking trail. There is also a concession stand for hungry folks and a well-stocked gift shop. An excellent way for a family to spend a day and learn a lot!

We love visiting the Fort Fisher Aquarium, and try to every time we're down at the beach. There also seems to be something new to see, or a new way to interact with some interesting wildlife. It's a great place to spend the day, while not being far from great beach spots or restaurants. There is food at the aquarium, but we think it's worth not eating there when you visit, since there are other local spots worth exploring for new visitors to that area of NC. Though the food is good, it's not much different than your typical burger or cafe spot. Definitely spend more time observing amazing wildlife, speaking with the knowledgeable staff or volunteers, and taking part in the events instead!
