Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites is a historic state park located at 29.888° -96.876°, just off U.S. Route 77, south of La Grange, Texas. The park sits on a sandstone bluff above the Colorado River. Monument Hill is a crypt and memorial to the men who died in the Dawson Massacre and in the Black Bean Episode of the ill-fated Mier Expedition.
The Kreische Brewery site commemorates the contribution European immigrants made in Texas, specifically German immigrant, stonemason and brewer Heinrich Kreische, whose house and brewery ruins are in the park. The Kreische Brewery and house were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 1975.
On September 18, 1848, the remains of Texans killed in the Dawson Massacre and the Black Bean Episode (death lottery), which had been retrieved from their original burial sites, were reinterred in a common tomb with a sandstone vault at the location now known as Monument Hill. Over 1,000 people came for the ceremony including U.S. Senator Sam Houston.

  • Stonehenge, but for beer? This state park is one on the best kept I have ever had the pleasure of strolling through. The grounds are so very well kept, so well kept infact you can feel the history surrounding you as you walk the trails that echo the footsteps of the men who settled this untamed piece of wilderness before us. Quarried from the surrounding land, the brewery remains are nothing less then breath taking. Every stone has a story it could tell and there are hundreds of thousands of stones all combining to show the ultimate price to pay for a tall frosty cold one. The cherry on top, Monument Hill, a view over all of LA Grange, the valley as well as the Colorado River. Pictures just can not do it justice. Definitely make time to visit Kreische Brewery State Park if you are in the area. Disappointment is not possible. *watch out for rattle snakes.
  • Exceeded expectations. Note this is an outdoor tour. Scenic views and super depiction of 1800' s upper class home life of pioneer brewmaster. Oh not to mention Texas Historical spot. The Black bean event where Santa killed those Yankees in 1830's.
