A small town of 2,200 people, Old Mesilla Village brings New Mexico history to life. Many current residents are direct descendants of the original settlers, who were a mix of Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American. The traditional architecture and adobe-style buildings still line the town's streets. Several families provide guided tours of the town, or you can pick up a brochure at the book center on the Plaza and take a self-guided walking tour of the area. Don't miss the Basilica of San Albino, constructed in 1855 of adobe. The church, which holds services in English and in Spanish, was rebuilt to its current state in 1906. This small town has played a role in many historical events, such as the Gadsden Purchase, the Civil War, and the trial of Billy the Kid--an outlaw of the Old West.
