Background of Baker Ranch:
In 1896, most pioneers were traveling west to find their fortunes, but Rex’s great-grandfather headed east from Australia, sailed to California, and then made his way to the mountains of southern Idaho, where he homesteaded in Lava Hot Springs. Rex’s grandfather started rearing sheep on the 1800-acre ranch, and it wasn’t until Rex’s father took over the farm in the 1960s, that cattle replaced the sheep. Potatoes were also a staple crop in the past.
The ranch now offers horse-drawn trolley rides, snowshoeing trips, wedding facilities, and other special events to the traveling public and has made a success of their berry plantation, which specializes in raspberries and elderberries. Sheep are again grazing at the Baker Ranch. Old English Southdown Babydolls and Royal Whites are the two breeds of lovable, grass trimmers for the expanding orchard.
The Baker Ranch has always been a snapshot in time and has reflected the ranching strategies of the managing generation since its foundation. From a sheep to a cattle ranch and a return to specialty breeds of sheep, it has evolved into an innovative tourism paradise. The key is ingenuity, which Rex, Peggy Ann, and their children Autumn and Jesse Baker share. But most importantly, their success lies in open communication, which allows Baker Ranch to be more than just a business or just a family, but an example of a successful family business.

I attended the Baker ranch wagon ride and cowboy dinner on a family reunion. The wagon ride up to the ranch was enjoyable and fun to take a step back in time. Dinner was a good country dinner. The music was great and continued western feeling and atmosphere. Overall a great family experience.
