The Black Hills Mining Museum was founded in 1986 by people who wished to tell and preserve the story of hard rock mining in the hills, and of the men and women who lived and toiled in and under the beautiful Black Hills.
More than 100 miners of the nearby Homestake Gold Mine combined their talent, money, time and experience to build this Museum and the realistic underground gold mine tour. The tour takes you through the history of the mine showing the changes over 125 years by the clothing, tools, techniques and equipment displayed, as described by your tour guide.
Aside from the guided tour, the Museum also offers self-guided views of much of our collections, including multi-media screens that explain various processes and aspects of the mining industry; and an approximately 20 minute movie that tells the story of mining in the Hills.
For those seeking personal riches, or, at least, to learn a new hobby, our team members will teach you how to pan for gold, indoors in our private 'stream' with local pay dirt that we can guarantee you find real gold. All the gold you find, you keep, to take home as a souvenir!

Stopped here on a whim after hiking the Homestead Trail to Lead from Deadwood. So glad we did! Friendly, knowledge guides and staff, thoroughly interesting tour about the mining process throughout the years, and an exhibit with lots of great artifacts. Highly recommend!
