Greenbrier Historical Society and North House Museum, Lewisburg

#3 of 9 in Things to do in Lewisburg
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · History Museum
The North House, as a museum, exists to commemorate and interpret life in Greenbrier County in the early 1800s. It accomplishes this purpose by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting items, which belonged to, or were associated with, Greenbrier County, as well as other period items, which are necessary to present a complete picture to the visitor. It also accomplishes this purpose by encouraging research and publications, which are appropriate to county history. Linked to this primary goal of interpreting a historical period at a particular point in time is the secondary goal of fostering interest in, knowledge of and understanding of the history, culture, arts, architecture, industry and lifestyle of Lewisburg and Greenbrier County prior to the American Civil War, especially as represented by the material culture of the community.

  • We stumbled upon this museum while visiting in nearby Caldwell. IT'S FREE, although they kindly accept any donation amount! There's a small gift shop with some fun, artisan and historical keepsakes. Our tour guide had such a great personality and knew a ton of fun and interesting history about the North family and Lewisburg itself. I'm so happy we stumbled upon this little museum, definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the area!
  • The staff was very helpful! We came from out of state to search for mid-1800 Greenbrier County ancestral vital records. They knew which records to pull, and where the record was stored. We wouldn't have gotten nearly as much done without their help. Thank you!
