Alafia River State Park, Lithia

4.7
#110 of 278 in Nature in Florida
Alafia River State Park is a Florida State Park, located near Picnic in Hillsborough County in central Florida, 10 miles southeast of Tampa on County Road 39. Even before it became a park, the area, and particularly Hurrah Lake, was the center of leisure activities since the early 1880s.
The park has such amenities as bicycling, birding, canoeing, fishing, hiking, horse trails, picnicking areas, wildlife viewing and full camping facilities. Especially known for its mountain biking, it has advanced trails in an area of the park that was once a phosphorus strip mine. The mountain bike trails were created and are maintained by the SouthWest Association of Mountain Bike Pedalers (SWAMP) club. The forest has grown back. The mine was abandoned before remediation laws took effect, and the area where mountain biking exists is an erratic mixture of pond depressions and abrupt hills jutting from the surface.

  • I took a quick drive into Alafia River State Park when I was in the area. It is a lovely park with forests and meadows. I noticed several species of birds including egrets. There is an extensive trail...  more »
  • What an amazing place! A beautiful look, several green lakes! There are different trails according to each level! We see people of all ages pedaling! It has some sinister trails, perfect for those who are professional! The whole place is very safe and well signaled! There is a shop inside the park where you can rent the bike and the helmet! The Jesus who works in the store is super nice! Nice to see a lot of people drinking cold beer when they finish the trail!!!

  • Marvelous well maintained trails for bicycles, horses and hikers. This was a reclaimed phosphate mine that now has streams, lakes and beautiful developed shade trees. Some of the exotic wooded trails make one feel that it's undulating Carolina country. There are experts willing to advise and help at the trail head and a great sense of comradery amongst riders. I will be looking for a mountain bike to fully enjoy the facility. Entrance is 5 bucks, which is put to good use. I did not see a Brazilian Pepper anywhere!
  • I love the mountain biking trails here. There's something for every skill level. Top notch facilities at the trailhead. They even have a repair stand and a bike wash! Well worth the price of admission!
