#2 of 17 in Nature in Los Angeles
Runyon Canyon Park represents an urban wilderness with desertlike habitat within one of America's most bustling cities. The park features hiking and picnicking areas, including an off-leash dog park (unleashed dogs are also permitted on hiking trails). Since it's close to Hollywood, you may spot celebrities here. Be sure to bring water with you; there are no water sources along trails. Nearby parking can be a challenge to find. • This hike was terrific. It is not for anyone incapable of walking in unsteady turf although there is also a paved path for strollers and buggies. Be aware that numerous dogs are off leash and running;...  more »
  • Great hike to see the awesome scenery and views and you may just see a celebrity or two while you are hiking! Wear a hat and bring water. Great exercise and well worth the hike - it takes a minute tho...  more »
  • My friend and I decided to hike Runyon Canyon on Memorial Day. Parking was tricky, but at least the street sweepers weren't an issue (as they were last time we went on a Monday). The views are stunnin...  more »

  • Great place to hike, walk, relax. Breathtaking views! Adjacent to the city and valley, can walk or run from one to the other. Great place for an awesome time with family and friends, including young children! Imbibe in the beauty of nature. Good place for dog-walking. Cool old ruins, must have some interesting history here.
  • I did this hike by myself. It was challenging for me, but I made it to the top. The trail path is a little beaten, should be well kept since it busy all the time. I love the display as your walking into the entrance, they have snacks and water where you pay a dollar for each item. This would never exist in N.Y. I loved it. I took the wrong hike, for the Hollywood sign. I'm glad I didn't, Iran out of water and headed down. Definitely worth it.
  • This trail is actually a “must do” if coming to LA. There are several different trails to take and all of them are reasonably challenging. It’s dog friendly as you’ll see many people with their furry friends tackling the trails and enjoying the views. There is no public parking, just street parking. However if you’re ok parking a few blocks away, there’s always available street parking. There are zero bathrooms, so definitely make that pit stop before you go!
  • Runyon Canyon Park is a great place to start ones morning off with fresh air, get an afternoon hike in, or catch the evening sunset out over Santa Monica in the Pacific Ocean. One of the best features of Runyon Canyon is that every single day is a new day and you never know who you are going to run into or what types of shenanigans may occur on the trails. The Runyon Canyon trail features a food and beverage stand incase one runs dry on foodstuff or libations during there explorations, as well as multiple water stations to refill water bottles and stay hydrated, which is extremely beneficial to the dry heat and glaring sun that Los Angeles is known for nearly year round. Near the base of the Runyon Canyon park there is a picnic area perfect for families or young couples looking to have an outdoor date. As for community activities, often times pop up yoga classes or hiking groups are formed to keep people motivated and in shape. I have several lively stories from times I have spent on this trail including, a man being rescued on the Mountain, after multiple helicopters, police, and firetrucks were sent to assist. Other than Griffith Observatory, Runyon Canyon Park offers a breathtaking overview of the Los Angeles landscape, whether its sunrise, sunset, or the lighting generated by the vast city. If you plan to visit Los Angeles for an extended weekend, be sure to hike through Runyon Canyon Park, you also get a distant view at the infamous Hollywood sign.
  • It was great to be able to go for a hike and not have to leave the city. This park offers some challenging trail climbs for the active, but also easier paved road climbs for the less active. Great views of the city and Hollywood sign. Farther up near the top you can see homes that are inside the park grounds which is interesting.
