Union Station, Los Angeles

#4 of 100 in Transportation in California
Mass Transportation System · Architectural Building
Conceived on a massive scale, Union Station counts among the country's last grand rail stations, and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Opened in 1939 after a controversial decision to consolidate services from a number of different railroads, the structure combines elements of several architectural styles, including Dutch Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, and Streamline Moderne. The building's team of architects included John and Donald Parkinson, the father-son duo who worked on several of the city's landmark structures. Be sure to pass through the station's main hall, featuring marble floors, cathedral ceilings, and leather chairs and chandeliers originally installed in the 1940s.
