#1 of 6 in Things to do in Los Osos
Hike, ride, bike, swim, camp, and more among the rugged cliffs, coastal plains, beaches, and hills of Montana de Oro State Park. Named the "Mountain of Gold" in Spanish for its golden wildflowers that appear in the springtime, the 3,237 hectare (8,000 acre) park features a large network of biking, foot, and equestrian trails ranging in difficulty and length. Head to the highest point, Valencia Peak, at 411 m (1,347 ft), or walk down to Spooner's Cove, the park's most popular beach. Try tide pooling in the coves to see some of the local marine life, and keep an eye out for otters, seabirds, and crabs. If you plan to swim here, beware of the strong tide. • Take the wife, take the kids, take anybody that has never been to California here. It really is the Mountain of Gold. Just remember when the sign says "no dogs" on a trail, don't take the dog. There's plenty of poison oak around the bluffs, and your best buddy will run all through it not knowing any better. He will infect himself, you, the kids, the car, the house...everything. Just be safe and enjoy the beauty. Peace ✌️
  • This is such a beautiful place, with a tiny beach, then a little hike to the "cliffs" and then another smaller beach. I absolutely love going there and watching the waves come in and crash against the rocks. The pictures you can get there at sunset are amazing.
