Cactus Theater began construction in Lubbock, Texas, in 1937 and officially opened in April of 1938 as the first suburban, neighborhood movie theater. Built with a cost of around $30,000, it originally featured 720 seats and a “washed air cooling system”. Its marquee featured 750 feet of neon lighting. The original venue operated from 1938-1958. It found new life from the mid-'90s and into the new millennium under the vision and guidance of Don Caldwell and the efforts of volunteers and investors seeking to revive this historic downtown venue.
Today, the Cactus continues to evolve and embrace new frontiers, guided by promoter and new theater owner Darryl Holland - with an added emphasis on booking national touring acts. Recently, new state-of-the-art digital cinema equipment and a retractable silver screen were added to the mix. Indeed, the Cactus Theater has gone "back to the future" by returning to its roots as a duel stage AND screen venue. Amazing atmosphere. Such an intimate space, I felt so close to the band. Clean and comfortable seating. Best money spent on live entertainment, it was the best value the price was so reasonable. They have a concession stand with drinks for adults and children. The owners are friendly and hands on in their business which you just can't find now a days. Truly a local treasure! I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit . Check it out if you're in town and if you live here and haven't experienced it, you need to go you'll have an amazing night!
We love going to the shows here. They are really good about getting different varieties of music and entertainers here for their patrons. We have never been disappointed.
