Flag Ponds Nature Park is a nature preserve located in Lusby, Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County, Maryland. It is operated by the Calvert County Department of Natural Resources. The park includes nature trails and a beach for swimmers. Fossil shark's teeth eroded from the Calvert Cliffs formation may be collected on the beach. The area included in the park was once a center for pound net fishing from the early 1900s through 1955. One fishing shanty remained until October 2012 when it burned down. It has since been rebuilt.Make Flag Ponds Nature Park a centerpiece of your Lusby vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Lusby trip planner.

Attempted to go to the park, but they are still only allowing Calvert County residents to access the park due to COVID. We did go three years ago and it was beautiful. Unfortunately it appears we... more »

This was a gem of a place! Found out about this park randomly, when debating about going to Breezy Point. We were trying to plan a day trip to the beach without spending a ton of money. This place was highly recommended and I'm glad we choose to come here! It was only $8 to get into the park! Pros: Cheaper than other beaches close by, a beautiful wide expanse of beach, many shells to sift through to find sharks teeth, no high waves or strong current, an open shower, bathrooms, trails to hike around, a visitor's center. Cons: The walk from the parking lot to the beach is a good 10-15 minutes on a mostly gravel road and uphill on the way back, the water is brown-brackish, it gets packed with people, the bathrooms are a little hike from the beach. As with any beach there are jelly fish.....but thankfully we didn't encounter any! Bring a sifter and buckets/pails! Also, water shoes are highly recommended! The shells are sharp! My 8, 5, and 2 year old has a great time! Also recommend packing plenty of food and water because you're not getting any someplace close! You'll be have a blast!

Love this place! It's really fun to look through the stones and shells to find sharks teeth. Bring your own sieve if you like, but there's a little box full of buckets and such if you need them. Lots of blue crabs scurrying through the stream before the beach. Fair warning, though, it's a half mile walk to the beach, and the sand is very rocky and sharp (Because of all the shells!)
