#2 of 70 in Trails in Minnesota
Cascade River State Park is a state park near the northeastern tip of Minnesota, USA, on the north shore of Lake Superior. The park is in a rocky and rugged location, and has many different types of wildlife.
Cascade River State Park is also connected to the Superior Hiking Trail.
The site was originally named Cascade River State Wayside. It was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps starting around July 1934. One of the projects was a huge overlook wall, built from locally quarried gabbro. The roadside development plans were drawn by Arthur R. Nichols and Harold E. Olson. The project was considered a model for roadside development within the state, and possibly even outside the state. The development work was supervised and inspected not just by National Park Service employees, but also by members of the Minnesota Highway Department, staff of the Minneapolis Park Board, Civilian Conservation Corps individuals, members of the Minnesota Legislature, and even some Canadian officials. The wayside was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 4, 2003.

  • Great hiking, always had the sound of the river in the background, beautiful scenery. Probably one of the funnest and most entertaining trails I've been on ever. It's disappointing this place is like 5 hours away from the cities, but on the other hand, that's what makes this place so peaceful. Getting to the peak requires a bit of sweat, some flexibility, and about 20-30 minutes, but it's accomplishing and provides some great photo opportunities. I'll have this place permanently saved as favorite on my Google Maps and will certainly be visiting again.
  • Beautiful overlook of Lake Superior. We were here in the winter and enjoyed the views. The sky was as clear as could be for most nights making for amazing views of the lake and the stars. Very little light pollution as the closest major city (Duluth) is ~2hours away. My fiance and I are already planning to come back in the fall for a long weekend of hiking and exploring.
