Visit The Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World, one of the oldest exhibits of live butterflies in the country. You'll discover between 60 and 80 species of butterflies in the gardens at any one time. Every week, 350 to 400 new chrysalis (pupae) are introduced, giving you the opportunity to witness butterflies emerging throughout the day. You'll watch them open their wings for the first time and begin collecting nectar from the flowers in the 548.6 sq m (1,800 sq ft) tropical garden. After viewing the butterflies, check out the insect section, with the world's heaviest--100 g (3.5 oz) bug--(a 40 cm (16 in) stick-bug) and giant spiders.
