Create an itinerary including Mammoth Cave
Winding through the ground for nearly 652 km (405 mi), the World Heritage Site Mammoth Cave claims the title, by a significant margin, of longest cave system on the planet. You won’t be the only one surveying the cave. Exploration continues constantly, so the official length of the system continues to grow with the discovery of new passageways, tunnels, and caverns. In addition to thousands of bats, the subterranean labyrinth possesses a nearly 6,000-year history of humans, beginning with pre-Columbian natives of the region. The National Park Service runs multiple versions of its cave tours of varying length, which can take you on popular paths or on more adventurous routes that require some tight squeezes and nimbleness. Watch for geological mineral and rock formations scattered throughout the cave. • We did the historic tour. It was awesome! I was nervous about the 2 hour duration, but the time flew by. There was plenty to see. Our guide was interesting and personable. Our group was not so big...

  • Ranger Alex really made my short visit to the main entrance and caves memorable. Answered questions and was a phenomenal storyteller. The caves were worth the trip and I will definitely be back to go through more of them and hit some hiking trails.
  • Best cave in the country? Depends. Carlsbad caverns is bigger and more impressive.. Wind caves NP has more interesting formations. But this has multiple levels formed by rivers, so that was cool.
