Nolin Lake State Park, Mammoth Cave

#29 of 59 in Nature in Kentucky
In May 2001, Nolin Lake State Park opened to the public. The 5,795-acre lake, created from the impoundment of the Nolin River in 1963, and the 333-acre park are located along the northern edge of Mammoth Cave National Park in Edmonson County. Nolin Lake State Park is the perfect escape, featuring 32 campsites with hookups for water and electricity, 40 primitive campsites, a beach, a boat ramp, shower and laundry facilities, a playground, and around 9 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Nolin Lake provides great fishing for guests as well, with an abundance of bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye.

The area surrounding Nolin Lake State Park is topographically diverse. From the Great Sinkhole Plain in the south to the Dripping Springs Escarpment in the north, and from the peaks of tall hills to the Nolin River and Green River valleys, Edmonson County is an astoundingly beautiful place. Named for Captain John Edmonson of Virginia, who was killed at the Battle of the River Raisin during the War of 1812, Edmonson County is part of "cave country" and is home to Mammoth Cave, the longest known cave system in the world. Since opening for tours in 1816, millions of visitors have come to explore the more than 400 miles of known cave passages. Established in 1941, Mammoth Cave National Park now covers 53,000 acres across three counties: Edmonson, Hart, and Barren.

  • Beautiful state park and campground! We stayed for 5 nights, and wish we could have stayed longer! Several sites have direct access to the lake. Even the sites that don’t have direct lake access...  more »
  • Nolin is a great place to get away from the stress of work and school. The swimming areas are never overcrowded and the fishing and boating is some of the best anywhere. My family and I have always had a good experience at Nolin Reservoir State Resort Park.
  • For the region this is a five star park, in the broader national scope I'd say it is a three star park. Very nice campgrounds, clean and well kept facilities, great day use area for picnics, swimming, boating, and fishing on the lake, and the excellent 9 or so mile Brier Creek natural surface trail system great for mountain biking and hiking; the trail system is maintained by the Southwest Kentucky Mountain Bike Association (SW KyMBA). For mountain bikers and hikers Nolin Lake State Park would be a great base camp, ride/hike Brier Creek Trails one day, kick back and enjoy the Lake, the next day go to Mammoth Cave NP (8 miles away) and ride/hike the Big Hollow Trail System and do a cave tour at Mammoth Cave National Park. If you still have energy go over to the Port Oliver Recreation Area on Barren River Lake and hike or bike the short, fun and twisty Twisted Oliver Trails.
