Nestled in a scenic village, Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home offers a glimpse into American history. The former summer home of Robert Lincoln, President Lincoln's eldest son, was completed in 1905 in the Georgian Revival style. The house was restored together with the outbuildings and gardens in 1978 when a non-profit organization bought the property. To learn more about the history of the place, watch the promotional video. Make the most of 19 km (12mi) of walking trails and visit the goat farm, teaching greenhouse, and the wooden Pullman palace car from 1903. This is a tremendous example of the Gilded Age. This large home is compared to Lincoln's Log Cabin birthplace and the contrast is amazing. The player organ with bellows in the basement and pipes built into the staircase is worth the trip itself. Wonderful glimpse into the life of Lincoln's son and family. Great exhibit of the luxury Pullman car and a good notation on the history of civil rights coming out of the Pullman Porter situation. Wonderful guide at the Pullman car. Amazing to see the technology level of the house Circa 1890. A little pricey but worth seeing to better understand the Gilded Age.
What a treat to experience this beautiful piece of history! We were fortunate enough to visit during the Christmas season and the decorations were incredible! This is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year, I can image, and we’ll definitely be back again. Don’t miss out on visiting this estate. It will transport you into history with an unspoiled mountain vista for a backdrop.
