Roanoke Marshes Light was a screw-pile lighthouse in North Carolina.
Little is recorded about this light, which was replaced in 1955 with an automated light on a shorter tower. It marks the south entrance to the channel through Croatan Sound, to the east of a marshy shoal extending from the western shore. Ironically this places it in the deepest bottom in the area.
There was a predecessor light on this site, beginning in 1857. The pictured light, of conventional screw-pile construction, was lit in 1877. When the light was decommissioned, an unsuccessful attempt was made by a private party to move it, but the house was lost in the sound.
In 2004, a replica of the light was dedicated at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum in Manteo, North Carolina. Plan your visit to Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Manteo trip website.

  • The lighthouse is near shops in Manteo. Beautiful scenery all around. Can’t walk up to top but there is a small museum with history about lighthouse inside the lighthouse.

  • This is a very unique little lighthouse found on Roanoke Island. This was our first time staying on the island and it is packed with very interesting history. We walked to the lighthouse since the island is easy to get atound. The boardwalk surrounding the structure is very nice to walk on, the area is very scenic, calm and relaxing. There is no cost to visit the lighthouse. There was a tour going on at the time we stopped by so we listened in on that. Grab a meal, get out there and check it out.
  • Another place to visit on the island was the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. This actually was very interesting place historically and I found it to be very intriguing. I guess I've never really looked into or cared to study the history of the Roanoke colony and it's disappearance. It's also very interesting that this is the location of the first English colonist born in america. I had no idea that this was the location. We had a good time visiting the lighthouse and the boat repair shop and the Little village shops that they have around here. We also got some really good ice cream at one of the stores. This is a great place to visit and put on your list of things to do while you're visiting the area.
