Long House, Mesa Verde National Park

4.8
#5 of 7 in Historic Sites in Mesa Verde National Park
Take a step back in time on a guided tour of Long House, the second-largest cliff dwelling in the western section of the national park. Soak in the ambience as you navigate down a steep but easy trail, listening to your ranger guide explaining the architecture of the place. Apart from regular and ceremonial rooms, the dwelling features a tower, a central square, and an interesting water supply system. If you feel like hiking, note that the Long House Loop leads to various trailheads. Plan my trip to Mesa Verde National Park with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • One of our favorite sites! Really enjoyed our ranger lead tour. The tour is two hours long, with about an hour at the site. You can get your tickets up to two days in advance. We strongly recommend getting them as soon as possible. This site was a lot less crowded than the others. We were able to have a much closer look at the dwellings too. Well worth the drive.
  • Absolutely spectacular! Long House is the second largest set of ancient ruins within Mesa Verde, but they are only accessible by ranger-guided tours that are offered seasonally. Make reservations in advance, because tours are limited to 30 people.. Tours last 2 to 2.5 hours, and the hike is moderately strenuous with mostly paved trails, switchbacks and steps to descend into the canyon, and ladders and steps to explore within the ruins. Only water may be taken into the ruins, so eat your lunch and snacks BEFORE you start the hike.
