Corn Palace, Mitchell

3.2
#1 of 8 in Things to do in Mitchell
Russian/Moorish-styled Corn Palace, decorated with murals and designs from corn and other grains, features a new design every year. New murals are designed annually out of more than 275,000 ears of corn to cover the outside of the building. This tradition began in 1892, when town officials decided to showcase crops in an effort to get pioneers to realize the potential of the soil so they would settle in the area. Today, the palace is a multipurpose building, hosting numerous community events and exhibits. You can see pictures from the previous years' happenings. • There isn’t much here, but fun to see the new designs. Very “corny”. Worth a stop for a few pics at this classic road side attraction. Free parking available.  more »
  • Gun time here with my 14 year old and husband. It had been a long time since I’d visited before (1983) and still amazes me! Fun pictures and tasty caramel corn inside. We had a good time and it was fr...  more »

  • I have wanted to see this since I was a fourth grade kid in 1963. Well- It was everything I expected. Big, ornate, and much of the exterior covered with designs & tableaux made of corn, rye straw, prairie grass, & other natural and agricultural materials. Entry/admission is entirely free. Lot of history to learn from displays, and good snacks available. Across the street is a well-stocked souvenir store. It was worth the 55 year wait!
  • The Corn Palace is very fascinating. So much to learn and experience here. The Corn murals are awesome. Make sure to see all of them: west side of building (front), south side, and inside the auditorium. Check out the exhibits on the second floor as well. Take your picture across the street with "Cornelius". This is a nice venue for various shows and sports events. Gift shop across the street and in the arena (summer). Free admission and lots of free parking. Pet friendly! If you're in town at dusk, enjoy the light show. Lots of colors projected on the building.
  • You know, it's not what I remember. I hadn't been there in probably 25 years and all I remember is being bored out of my skull, but now there is a basketball court in the middle with a bunch of gift shop type displays. I don't know, they also have a gift shop across the street, I was actually more interested in learning something 25 years later! But it's free, and definitely the about the biggest attraction in that part of SD, so I can't really complain. The highlights are really the mosaic art made from corn, I mean it obviously took a lot of talent to do it but it doesn't really crank my tractor. It's one of those stops though I felt compelled to take the kids to though. I'm sure maybe in another 25 years they'll take there kids too and they'll probably be just as board! I will say though, I love the fact thay Mitchell's sports teams are called the Kernels, I don't know why but it totally made my day!
  • The outside of the Corn Palace is beautiful! The murals cover two sides of the building, change every year and are amazing! Inside you can read about the history. The building also houses a nice spacious events center. Definitely worth a stop.
  • Great to stretch the legs a little and see a cool tradition and cute downtown. The corn murals on the outside are cool, more permanent ones inside. Little cafe with popcorn etc. Worthwhile way to break up a long drive.
