It is one thing to lead, but another to nurture – and the Aldo Leopold Nature Center does both. Through its programs and approach to education, ALNC provides a safe and positive environment for children and their families to explore the natural world – together. Whether it be discovering how tadpoles grow into frogs; investigating the variety of grasses in a prairie, or quietly soaking up the beauty of a summer sunset, ALNC provides an opportunity for children to connect to the land – to discover their own answers to life’s big questions and to create the relationships that will serve them for the remainder of their lives. Experiences at ALNC teach children the subtle, yet profound, lessons learned through nature.

Our approach is grounded in Aldo Leopold’s philosophy: “...teach the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands.” Our work is experiential and hands-on -- teaching students to slow down, to rediscover their own senses, and to use those senses in uncovering the environment around them. We hope you will join us as we educate and engage current and future generations, empowering them to respect, protect, and enjoy the natural world. We want today’s children to become responsible stewards of the land and healthy, confident leaders in a sustainable future.

  • Beautiful nature center located just outside the city! They've got a lovely prairie full of diverse plant life, squirrels and a wide array of birds including a nesting pair of sandhill cranes. There's a nice array of trails through the nature park and inside there's an awesome exhibit of climate and the earth, including two very cool movie presentations in unique little theaters.
  • My two year old loves the Wonder Bugs preschool program! Every week there's a new topic with different activities for the kids to enjoy. It's well thought out and a great way to have kids learning about nature. Many fun events throughout the year including Maple Syrup Fest and Pipers in the Prairie. We love also love just stopping by to hike around. The whole place is beautiful.
