Discover a world of exotic plants at Ganna Walska Lotusland, created by famed opera singer and garden enthusiast Ganna Walska. Purchased in 1941 and intended to serve as a retreat for Tibetan monks, the estate consumed Walska's private time for most of her life. The singer spent over four decades designing and improving the sprawling property, eventually creating over a dozen distinct gardens. The 15 hectare (37 acre) gardens contain over 3,000 different species of plants, including ferns, aloes, lotuses, cycads, cacti, palms, bromeliads, and euphorbias. If you would like a tour of the gardens, be sure to call ahead of time to make reservations; the estate is open to the public by advance notice only. Tours happen twice a day in season and last approximately two hours. • Amazing day spent in another world. It is pricey to enter but you will realize why once you are there. The most remarkable and eclectic collection of gardens you have ever visited. Not to miss if.....  more »
  • Beautiful gem in Montecito. You can do the whole self guided tour in 1-1/2-2hours. Great respite, very interesting gardens and history. Highlight is the cactus garden- surreal!  more »
  • Extremely beautiful and historic gardens on the estate. Little pocket universes of plantings from spectacular cactus to prehistoric Jurassic ferns. Newly restored meditative Japanese garden, pools surrounded by gigantic clam half shells and gleaming opalescent abalone shells. A remarkable place to visit.
  • We were very fortunate to have a tour of this wonderful garden, with the interesting history of Ganna Walska included. It is a beautiful garden, very different from New Zealand gardens because of the climate. Lots of cacti and succulents, but also formal garden sections. Unfortunately the Japanese garden was closed for renovation, and we were too early in the season to see the lotus flowers. Definitely would like to revisit!
