  • Absolutely haunting history but it’s so important to learn about. We spent hours here and honestly would have gone back a second time if we had more time. There is so much to read and learn. There are also multiple theaters inside with short films as well. This museum is so well put together. If there’s one thing you do in Montgomery, let it be this!
  • Word of advice. If you are an empath or are a sensitive soul, please prepare yourself. I was in this museum for 10 minutes before my first tears began. It was emotionally overwhelming for me but I DO NOT regret it one bit. I needed to see this and I spend 3 hours in this museum. I could have stayed longer. I had so many emotions walking through this space. I was sad, angry, proud, inspired, angry again, and then hopeful. Everything about this museum is well done. It's such a beautiful space and even though it handles some really tough history, that is beautifully done as well. The docents looked great in all black and they did a great job of policing the area and answering questions. One of the ladies saw me taking notes and suggested I visit the website because a lot of the information can be found there. The exhibit that was the most impactful to me was the lynching area. I could barely hold in my sobs as I searched for the county in MS that my grandmother, born in 1932, grew up in. Her father was a sharecropper and I've heard stories from her about growing up and living in the South in that time, picking peas and cotton. Our family could be considered "lucky" because no one was lynched but I'm sure the fear of it was always present. Bottom line is GO. GO TO HERE! Everyone should experience this museum. Take your family, friends, loved ones. Some things should not be forgotten.
