  • Fascinating, informational, and tour guide knew an answer for every question. This was the historical tour we took but they also offer a twilight tour, an escape room, and other options throughout the year. The architecture was truly amazing and it has 1 of only 2 in the world turn table doors. It was amazing to hear how ordinary citizens would interact on the facility to get everyday items done; Mail or haircut. Definitely a good visit for older children. Might be a little bit scary for the younger. I felt it was handicap accessible. There were ramps throughout the tour. There is a gift shop and a photo opportunity to get a mugshot or sit in an electric chair.
  • This is a must see if you are anywhere in the area. My husband is retired Law Enforcement with a couple of those years in Corrections; my son is a CO and step son is a jailer. So tours like this are always intriguing to me! The history in the walls of this gothic building is amazing. Our tour guide Lee, was a CO previously (not in this prison obviously) and has a degree in history that is now the historian at the WV Penitentiary so I felt like we got the best guide! The gift shop offers reasonably priced souvenirs and the admission price for the regular tour is worth the fee. They offer senior and military discounts.
