Bodie Island Lighthouse, Nags Head

4.6
Bodie Island Lighthouse, which looks out over the Graveyard of the Atlantic, offers ranger-guided tours that talk about the history of the lighthouse and its environment. Originally built in 1847, the lighthouse was rebuilt twice in 25 years. The first rebuild addressed foundation issues. The second came after the Civil War when Confederate forces, fearing the structure would be used as an observation point, blew up the lighthouse in 1861. The structure currently at the location was built in 1872. It's a tough climb--with over 200 steps up 50 m (165 ft) in a narrow stairway. Schedule your tour in advance if possible; the attraction allows a limited number of advance bookings and a limited number of on-site bookings each day. Bodie Island Lighthouse is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Nags Head Edition.

  • This place is an easy drive from wherever you are staying while in the outerbanks. In addition to this lighthouse the other lighthouses are great to check out. The lighthouse is very good if you are looking to take some pictures of landmarks especially if you take pictures from the right side of the main building where the gift shop is. In addition. You are able to walk on a quick boardwalk that goes up to a overlook of the water. It has benches and is wheel chair accessible. Highly advise bringing binoculars and camera. This spot also has bathrooms if you need a break. Very open area and friendly staff as well as informative. Good way to spend a half hour or 45 min if you want to relax.
  • A Must stop for your lighthouse tour. Beautiful surroundings and be sure to check out the pier view for iconic photo opportunities. The marshlands surroundings provide nature entertainment. The gift shop is nice and restrooms are clean.
