Bodie Island Lighthouse, Nags Head

#2 of 39 in Things to do in Nags Head
Must see · Lighthouse · Tourist Spot
Bodie Island Lighthouse, which looks out over the Graveyard of the Atlantic, offers ranger-guided tours that talk about the history of the lighthouse and its environment. Originally built in 1847, the lighthouse was rebuilt twice in 25 years. The first rebuild addressed foundation issues. The second came after the Civil War when Confederate forces, fearing the structure would be used as an observation point, blew up the lighthouse in 1861. The structure currently at the location was built in 1872. It's a tough climb--with over 200 steps up 50 m (165 ft) in a narrow stairway. Schedule your tour in advance if possible; the attraction allows a limited number of advance bookings and a limited number of on-site bookings each day. Bodie Island Lighthouse is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

  • Wow the light house was great the tour to the top was 5 bucks each. Great view. Many stairs to climb. Good walk to a viewing platform to see the local habitation. A bit hot, but we'll worth it. By the way. Get there early or you'll wait up to 2 hours for a light house tour. I can't remember the cost per adult. Maybe 5 dollars. But great tour to take anyways.
  • Great place to take the kids. Awesome views at the top of the lighthouse and from the walk around deck leading up to the gazebo. Be prepared to spend 10 bucks for each adult and 5 bucks for each child under 11. Walk the stairs for a total of 219 stairs to the top. I will definitely bring them again. Minimum height requirement is 42 inches for children.
