Trip Planner: USA / North Carolina / North Carolina Coast / Outer Banks / Nags Head / Jockey's Ridge State Park
See the tallest sand dune on the Atlantic coast at Jockey's Ridge State Park, and look below the dune for a hiking trail through a maritime forest. Try picnicking, bird watching, kite-flying and even hang gliding at North Carolina's most-visited park. At an estuary just below the dune, head for a swim or go kayaking. The visitor center has an exhibit hall where you can learn about the park and its history. Remember to be cautious of hot sand. This was probably my favorite place on the Outer Banks. We went close to sunset and it was such a peaceful, beautiful place. It was so calming to walk barefoot across the dunes, watching the kites...

Softest sand ever. Ever since the people I go with showed me this place I understand why they said once they did that they begun to go every year. Well it most certainly wouldn't be as nice on a super hot and sunny day when you have a colder day, it's later in the evening, or the clouds or out it's a relaxing place to visit. Watch out for sand getting everywhere though! Especially if you have kids who'll wanna roll down the hills. =)
There are lots of activities you can do here like hang gliding, sand sledding, kite flying, etc. The Dunes are big and a lot to walk up so be prepared! Come around sunset for some amazing views. There is a great shopping center across the street called Kitty Hawk Kites. Make sure to stop by for some ice cream, toys, shopping, and more. It's pet friendly as well.
