When the Hope Mills burned in 1790, the grist mills were rebuilt as the New Hope Mills by Benjamin Parry. The town was renamed for the mills.
The building was saved from demolition in the 1930s and purchased and run by a group including playwrights Moss Hart and Kenyon Nicholson. Renovations converting the building into a theatre began in 1938. The first show opened there on 1 July 1939, Springtime for Henry featuring Edward Everett Horton.
The Bucks County Playhouse became a summer theater. It was the starting point for many actors and became a place where plays slated for Broadway were tried out. Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park had its premiere at the theater in 1963, starring Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley. Other notable actors who performed at the theater over the years include Bela Lugosi, Dick Van Dyke, Tyne Daly, Grace Kelly, Angela Lansbury, and Walter Matthau.
The Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy, a public/private partnership, raised sufficient funds to regain the property following a 2010 foreclosure. Following an extensive renovation, the theater reopened on July 2, 2012.

Bucks County Playhouse reviews

Saw Buddy Holly, and it was great; will returns to see other shows. Music and performances were excellent. The location and venue are perfect. Ticket prices are reasonable and great value. They have valet parking and a restaurant attached to the theater. Only improvement would be to have more restrooms available at intermission, but that's true of every playhouse!

Very enjoyable afternoon matinee theater experience. Show (Buddy Holly) was very entertaining with lots of great music. BCP is a fine venue in scenic town. Playhouse offers valet parking, which beats hunting for parking in New Hope. Ate lunch at the Deck, a new restaurant connected with the Playhouse; food was certainly acceptable and service was good. You can find more accomplished restaurants in New Hope, but you probably can't beat the convenience or the view.
