May Baily's Place, New Orleans

4.2
Our French Quarter bar, May Baily's Place, was once one of the better known bordellos as part of the red-light district, known as Storyville, that existed from 1897-1917 in New Orleans. The modest cottage at 423 Rue Dauphine, built in 1821, was once one of the better known bordellos operating on the fringe of Storyville. Today May Baily’s Place is decorated in a Victorian style with portraits of madams by New Orleans’ famous Storyville photographer E.J. Bellocq. A framed copy of the operating license issued to May Baily is displayed at the bar. Our Bordello guest suite takes an appropriate featured place above May Baily's, and a red light still burns in the courtyard next to it as a testimony to its history.

The red light, the memorabilia and the Baily name are all that remain of an era that made even decadent old New Orleans blush.

  • We stayed at the Dauphine and got complimentary drinks at the bar. Sazerac was good, the atmosphere was great. I loved the decor and the piano. We did not see anything though, even when we sat by the bar so we can see the mirror where a figure in white supposedly appears.
  • This is one of my favorite watering holes in the French Quarter. Just not right now. They are remodeling the main bar and for the interim a small meeting room is being used for serving drinks. Which is too bad, bartender Daniela has created a wonderful new cocktail that's a mint-lemonade hybrid and surely will rival the Pimm's Cup as THE drink for summer down here in Silver Bayou. I will restore the place to it's well-deserved 4-star rating when the remodel is finished I hope.
