Mohegan Bluffs, New Shoreham

#1 of 29 in Beaches in Rhode Island
Must see · Geologic Formation · Beach
Look far out on the Atlantic Ocean from the top of Mohegan Bluffs before heading down to dig your feet into the sand at the bottom. The 46 m (150 ft) cliffs remain a favorite scenic point on Block Island, and they take their name from a 16th-century battle in which Niantic Native Americans sent invading Mohegans plummeting to their death below. Today, a steep staircase of about 100 steps provides safer access to the beach. Put Mohegan Bluffs and other New Shoreham attractions into our New Shoreham trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • after a seemingly tortuous ride around the Island, we arrived at Payne's stairway, high above the southeast Mohegan Bluffs. We didn't venture down the stairs, but the view was spectacular!  more »
  • A must stop when in the island. You can walk down the stairs not far from the from the lighthouse and there are visuals everywhere!  more »
  • Never busy, and beautiful. What more could you ask for
  • Beautiful but not for the fainthearted. Stairs go down part of the way then you get to scramble over rocks, sand and rough footing to the ocean floor. We went right after a huge rainstorm and the water was still flowing making it quite slick. The trek up and down was well worth it.
