Harkin's General Store is all that remains of West Newton, in Nicollet County, Minnesota, United States. Alexander Harkin opened the store as combination general store and post office in 1867 in the growing town of West Newton. The town fell into decline after four years of locust in southern Minnesota, and the railroad passed by West Newton. The store finally closed its doors in 1901.
Most of the stock was left when the store was closed and abandoned, and remains today as a museum managed by the Nicollet County Historical Society in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society.
Harkin Store is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

  • Enjoyed the history in this little store. The store was a little dark. The story behind the store was also interesting.  more »
  • Excellent history, do not know the name of the lady which gave a talk but she was excellent. Kept the children enthused and they came away with quite a bit of knowledge.  more »

  • This was a wonderful time warp. It is a historical site in the state of Minnesota and has a very interesting role in the history of this area of the state. It will teach young and old alike not to take what they have today for granted as they explain the setting and conditions of families living one hundred years ago. Every family should go. Well worth the stop!
  • It's wheelchair accessible the ramp is assembled or handicap parking on the hill . Great visit and they pull you into the story as if you were really way back during that time. There's a ton of special events and things to look at. There's a old checker game you can play to. Cute little store and post office.. amazing to learn about the ships along the Minnesota River. Closes at 4 so you will want to arrive earlier in the day .
