Harkin's General Store is all that remains of West Newton, in Nicollet County, Minnesota, United States. Alexander Harkin opened the store as combination general store and post office in 1867 in the growing town of West Newton. The town fell into decline after four years of locust in southern Minnesota, and the railroad passed by West Newton. The store finally closed its doors in 1901.
Most of the stock was left when the store was closed and abandoned, and remains today as a museum managed by the Nicollet County Historical Society in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society.
Harkin Store is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

  • Enjoyed the history in this little store. The store was a little dark. The story behind the store was also interesting.

  • This place is a Historical Place, they do give out tours , but at the time it was close.
  • A must stop place that will surprise you. Happened upon it on pure chance (had never heard of it), and really enjoyed it. Definitely worth the $6. It transports you back to the late 1800s. Take your time and ask lots of questions. Our clerk was very chatty.
