Overlooking Central Park's lake since 1859, Bethesda Fountain is a breathtaking circular structure with a female winged angel perched at the top of several cascades. Below the neoclassical angel, four cherubs represent temperance, purity, health, and peace. The angel's artist, Emma Stebbins, was the first female to receive public commission for a major New York City art piece. The only sculpture featured in the park's original layout, it commemorates the opening of the Croton Aqueduct, which provided fresh water to the city. Snap a picture in front of the iconic fountain, which you may recognize from countless movies, television shows, and even video games.
