Father Demo Square is a 0.25-acre (0.10-hectare) triangular park and piazza bounded by Sixth Avenue, Bleecker Street, and Carmine Street in the South Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City. The park is named for Father Antonio Demo, who was the pastor of the neighboring Our Lady of Pompeii Church from 1897 to 1935. The church was relocated to Carmine Street in 1926–1928 to accommodate an extension of Sixth Avenue south of Bleecker Street, which created the triangular plot of land. The park, located opposite Carmine Street from the church, was established in 1923 with the Sixth Avenue extension and the land was improved as a park, being named in a tribute to Demo.
The square was renovated in 2007, which entailed the installation of the current stone fountain, the low fence around the square, and the expansion of the sidewalk into Bleecker and Carmine Streets.
Father Demo Square Reviews
I like to bring with me people here when they visit New York City for the first time because of the stairs who are on this square. Especially at night the stairs make a huge impression. more »
OK, I know that “square” refers to a public gathering place, but It’s a triangle and it’s only ¼ acre in size, but it does have a nice fountain and is in a nice part of NYC. Father Demo Square is... more »
Whenever in NYC we go to Faicco's for the best Italian sub ever and then go eat in this park. Or if you're in the mood for Joe's never a bad look as well. Great spot to just kick it and grub!
After walking around the Bleecker st. neighborhood, taking a seat in the park is so inviting. Lots of people around the area taking a breather. Most of them are munching something. Seems like people would grab their food and take a seat in the park. Hence the occasional trash inconsiderate people leave behind considering there's a trash can in the entrance. But overall its a nice place to sit around before you move on to your next destination.
