The Helmsley Building is a 35-story building located at 230 Park Avenue between East 45th and East 46th Streets in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1929 as the New York Central Building, and was designed by Warren & Wetmore, the architects of Grand Central Terminal, in the Beaux-Arts style. Before the completion of the Pan Am Building—now the MetLife Building—this building stood out over one of the city's most prestigious avenues as the tallest structure in the great "Terminal City" complex around Grand Central. The building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1987.
Traffic exits and enters the Park Avenue Viaduct through the building, through two portals, one for uptown traffic and one for downtown. They connect to Park Avenue proper at East 46th Street.
Helmsley Building Reviews
This is one of my favourite New York City landmarks, and looks stunning at night illuminated by coloured lights. Its built in the Beaux-Arts-Style, by architects Warren and Wetmore who were also the architects for the Great Central Terminal - something i didn't know! The biilding is 535 feet tall and 34 stories high. Its unique feature is the two tunnels for traffic that run under the building, one uptown, the other downtown. Its a real shame you can't go inside the building, as its a private office block. A great piece of architecture.
Iconic tourist destination, but a bit underwhelming given the attention it receives. Notably, this is not the same as Grand Central, which is slightly further South (basically adjacent) - this seems to be a common source of confusion for tourists. Recommended tourist circuit (in forward or reverse order): 1. New York Public Library - Rose Main Reading Room 2. Rockefeller Center 3. St. Patrick's Cathedral 4. (Optional) Lotte New York Palace 5. Waldorf Astoria (exterior) 6. Helmsley Building (exterior) 7a. Grand Central 7b. Shuttle to Times Square
